Russian fighter jet flies within five feet of American spy plane

An armed Russian fighter jet flew within five feet of a U.S. Air Force RC-135 reconnaissance aircraft traveling over the Baltic Sea Monday, according to multiple national media reports.

U.S. defense officials told NBC News the American spy plane was in international airspace when it was intercepted by the Russian jet, which was flying fast in a manner described as "both unsafe and unprofessional." The Russian pilot had "poor control" of the jet, according to Navy Capt. Danny Hernandez.

Hernandez said the U.S. spy plane did not provoke the close encounter, and it was not immediately clear whether or not the two aircrafts communicated, according to the Associated Press.

Intercepts between planes belonging to the two nations are common, but are not normally that close, the AP reported.
