Non-profit Care Net offers women alternatives to abortion

Jillian Angeline reports.

WACO - A faith-based non-profit offering women alternatives to abortion parked themselves Wednesday in front of Waco’s Planned Parenthood facility.

It is in response to the center’s announcement Tuesday that they will begin performing abortions again after a long and drawn out legal fight.

It was put on by Care Net Pregnancy Center with the hopes that women will spend time with them instead of Planned Parenthood.

In 2013, House Bill 2 blocked the non-profit from providing abortions, but that changed after the U.S. Supreme Court shot down key ports of HB 2 last summer.

With the announcement, came protests and now a mobile pregnancy center across the street.

Care Net CEO Deborah McGregor said when she heard the announcement by Planned Parenthood, she drove to Dallas to pick up the ultrasound-equipped van.

“It’s not something than any of us wanted to say, yeah let’s go over and do it,” she said. “but we just didn’t see how as a ministry and community that we could just sit back and say, it’s a real drag and not do anything.”

McGregor said she has been flooded with emails and calls of support

“We are just the first front in the fight, but we have support across the state,” she said.

Care Net provides free services including sonograms, prenatal care and education classes. McGregor believes the mobile unit can provide a way out of an abortion for some women.

“And we also just finished a 14,000-square foot facility where mother and baby can stay if she’s homeless in order to continue a pregnancy,” she said. “We pray that Planned Parenthood will decide to stop.”

Channel 6 contacted Planned Parenthood for comment about Care Net’s presence outside the facility. Their spokesperson did not want to comment. However, they referred us gain to their announcement which detailed their ability to beginning performing abortions again, along with updating their health center and equipment.

McGregor said the van will be set up every day outside of the facility as long as the community supports them.
