Three central Texas cities are among the safest in the state.
SafeWise released its top 50 safest cities in Texas 2017 report and named Hewitt, Robinson and Gatesville among the safest.
The crime rate in five of Texas’s most populated cities dropped an average of 6.48% between 2014 and 2015, according to a study by the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law.
SafeWise identifies the safest cities by reviewing the most recent FBI Crime Report statistics from 2015, along with population data. Cities fewer than 10,000 residents as well as cities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI were eliminated.
Texas’s overall property and violent crime rates are slightly higher than the national averages. SafeWise said every city that made their safest city list is well below the national crime rates.
According to FBI data, there were only 15 murders or non-negligent homicides reported in all top 50 safest cities.
Forty-four of the cities on SafeWise’s list are making their second consecutive appearances including the three central Texas cities. Hewitt dropped down 11 spots from 16 to 27. Gatesville bumped up 12 spots from 42 to 30. Robinson bumped up two spots from 25 to 23.
According to SafeWise, 80 percent of this year’s safest cities reported fewer than 10 robberies, 96 percent reported fewer than five arsons, and 20 percent reported zero incidents of rape.
