Temple PD hosts bone marrow drive

Temple PD holds bone marrow drive

TEMPLE - Temple PD hosted a blood and bone marrow drive Saturday, and challenged other departments to take part.

The drive was held for Terry Dorcas, who was diagnosed with mantle cell lymphoma. However, the drive benefited many others in need of a bone marrow match as well.

Belton PD brought its police explores out to help, and a competition soon brewed between the departments to register the most officers.

Bone marrow matches are much more difficult to find than blood -- some people spend years waiting for a match.

Dorcas said if just one person gets a match from Saturday's drive, the event will be well worth it.

"It's very critical to so many people, for a lot of people it is the only way they will survive," Dorcas said.

The event registered more than fifty new donors for patients across the country.
