Temple Police host toy drive giving joy to local families in need

The Temple Police Department is preparing to help make Christmas a little better for local families in need.

TEMPLE - The holidays are a time for happiness, joy and giving. But not every family in the local community has the resources to make the season special. The Temple Police Department has set out to help.

Officers from the department were stationed at Michael's and Walmart in Temple, collecting donations and toys for for the annual Blue Santa toy drive.

The collected gifts will be going to a family in need living in Temple, with a child under the age of 17.

Lt. Rick Ashe told Channel Six News that many employees in the department  work extremely hard on this project throughout the year. According to Ashe, employees are gathering, wrapping and identifying families in need all year round.

Last year, the toy drive helped more than 120 families and more than 300 children.

Members of the department will also be collecting toy donations for their Blue Santa Toy Drive Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be donation stations set up at Michael's on General Bruce Drive and the Walmart on West Adams Avenue.

The department asks donators to give only new and unused toys.
