Vandals repeatedly target local Democrats

More democratic party signs have been vandalized in Waco.

WACO - For at least a week, the McLennan County Democratic Party has repeatedly been targeted by vandalism.

On Monday, Channel Six reported on how vandals spray-painted a pro-Hillary sign in Waco. But in the week since, the vandalism has gotten worse.

McLennan County Democratic Party Chair Mary Duty said the Democrats have seen 10 to 15 instances of vandalism this week.

"What we've got to do in this country is get back to the place where we can discuss our differences and do it in a way that doesn't take us to this level," Duty said.

On Thursday morning, Windel Dickerson -- a retired psychologist who lives in Waco -- found his front yard vandalized. Dickerson, who has been confined to a wheelchair since a stroke six years ago, noticed his Hillary Clinton signs were spray-painted and his sidewalk was covered in anti-Democratic graffiti.

At least 50 people from both sides of the political aisle have offered to help Dickerson clean up. But, Dickerson told Channel Six he plans to leave the defaced signs in his yard and graffiti on his sidewalk until the election -- as a reminder to the person who did it.

"I have a great deal of sympathy for those who authored the designs in that we need government change," Dickerson said.

Local Democrats have reported this case and other recent instances of vandalism to Waco Police.

As far as charges are concerned, the person responsible could face a criminal mischief charge -- if caught. In Texas, it could be considered a felony if the damage were to exceed $1,500.
