Waco veteran research facility could change battlefield medicine

A state-of-the-art facility will study mental health issues in the hope of helping veterans in the future.

WACO - A new state-of-the-art veteran research facility opened in Waco Thursday.

Multi-million dollar improvements were made to the Center of Excellence for Research on Returning War Veterans, which will help study mental health issues in the hope of helping veterans in the future.

"The Center of Excellence will help us understand those issues and help us develop treatments so we can stop this unfortunate loss of 20 heroes a day for suicide," Rep. Bill Flores (R, District 17) said.

A ribbon cutting was held Thursday morning at the Doris Miller VA campus.

The new facility includes a wet lab and the strongest MRI machine found anywhere in Central Texas. Even though the grand opening was Thursday, the MRI machine had already scanned 60 or 70 patients.

Employees at the facility said they were excited to see how the research lab could shape battlefield medicine.
