The Doris Miller Family YMCA in Waco is working to keep kids off the street by putting them in a summer enrichment program.
The Strong Kids Card program offers financial assistance for out-of-school care, youth sports and education programs, meal programs and even swim lessons. It encourages academic success, healthy living and social responsibility. Alex Prince is the program's coordinator. He said the program allows kids to build character through tutoring, community service and digital media.
"What they mainly need is time and attention," Prince said. "They don't need shoes, games, electronics, they just need your time, attention and love."
The program's participants are required to fulfill eight hours of learning activities each month. Once they meet the summer requirements, they get a yearly membership to the YMCA for free.
Prince said he sees roughly 275 children per week.
