MILWAUKEE (AP) - Some of the new
Wisconsin quarters are worth considerably more than 25 cents. Coin
collectors in San Antonio and Tucson, Arizona, have discovered two
variations in the design of a cornstalk on the back of the quarter.
The Wisconsin version of the
coin was released last year as part of the state coin series. An
Arizona coin dealer says he started paying $50 each for the quarters
when he learned of them, but prices have escalated. He's now
offering a set of three Wisconsin quarters for over $1,000, with
individual coins with the variations selling for as much as $600.
U.S. Mint spokesman Mike White
says there have been "very, very rare" instances of variations in
coin making. White says the Mint is trying to determine how the
differences came about.
Officials have no plans to mint
more of the varied quarters.

The Wisconsin quarter at top is correct. The other two coins
feature markings that resemble extra corn leaves.
