After enduring four straight losses and three in a row on the road, Baylor bounced back to improve upon their stellar home record. With the game tied 1-1 following an Aaron Dodson sacrifice fly and UIW run on a wild pitch, the game was decided in the fourth inning.
Matt Menard roped a one-out double down the right field line and Mitch Price followed with an infield single. Then Dodson launched a fastball over the right-center wall for a three-run home run to put BU ahead for good.
UIW threatened in the fifth with a run on a two-out bunt single by Mark Whitehead. However, Brett Doe countered in the seventh with an RBI single, and the relief combo of Doug Ashby and Josh Michalec closed out the game.
Earning the win was BU starter Dillon Newman (3-1), who allowed two runs on six hits with four strikeouts in six innings. Ashby threw 1.2 scoreless frames to bridge the gap to Michalec, who earned his 10th save with 1.1 hitless innings. "To see [Aaron] Dodson take as good of an at-bat as he did and take as good of a swing as he did [in the fourth inning] is encouraging. For us to be able to score three runs on one swing is great because we haven't been able to do that much, if at all. I really thought [Logan] Brown did well, too. He had two great bunts and he also got on top of a breaking ball for a hit through the left side. When he gets on base, it really puts pressure on the other team and gives us a lot of options. It was really good to see him have something good happen for him at the plate." – BU head coach Steve Smith
