Baylor Track & Field Captures Eight Baylor Invitational Event Titles

WACO, TEXAS - Baylor track and field athletes recorded eight event wins at the Baylor Invitational Saturday inside Clyde Hart Track & Field Stadium.

In the meet’s third-year at the state-of-art-facility on the Brazos River, the Bears battled 14 other teams in front of 1,285 fans on a windy day.

Senior Cion Hicks starred for BU as she set the school record in the shot put with a heave of 56-9.25 [17.30m]. The Copperas Cove, product fouled on her first attempt and then popped the BU and stadium record throw on her second toss. Hicks’ mark is fourth-best in the NCAA for 2017. She improved on her personal best mark of 56-1 [17.09m], which she set at the 2016 Big 12 Championship, while bettering the school record mark (56-3.75 [17.16m]) of Skylar White from 2011.Hicks also finished second in the discus later in the day with a best throw of 163-6 [49.85m].

After coming up just short in last year’s 400-meter race at the meet, Wil London left no doubt in racing to the 2017 quartermile crown in 45.46. The sophomore controlled the race through the opening 200 meters and then held off teammate George Caddick as the pair ran into a strong headwind over the final 100 meters. Caddick, a senior, still carded a personal-best time of 45.80 en route to a runner-up finish. London’s time is second-best in the country, while Caddick’s is fifth.

Freshman Maxwell Willis wowed the crowd with a time of 10.08 to win the 100-meter dash. Willis’ time was a personal best and third-fastest in the country currently with the wind a legal 2.9 m/s.

For a second-straight year, Taylor Bennett won the Baylor Invitational 200-meter crown. The sophomore Bear blazed down the back stretch to finish in 22.76, which was a season-best time and the fifth-fastest in the NCAA for 2017.

Matt League carded a victory in the 1,500 meters with a personal-best mark of 3:54.42. Kiana Hawn upped her streak to three-straight races in which she has run under 58 seconds as she won the 400-meter hurdles in 57.45.

Kiana Horton, Taylor Bennett, Leticia De Souza and Jhane’ King recorded a win in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 44.32.

In the first event contested on the day, multi-event athlete Chase Hood captured the javelin title with a personal-best throw of 200-2 [61.02m].

• The women’s 4x400-meter relay of Victoria Powell, Jhane’ King, Rachel Toliver and Leticia De Souza clocked a time of 3:37.50 to finish second.

TOP QUOTE #1
"We always try to improve. Sometimes improvement is in one event area. Sometimes it’s in another. The wind is a friend to some and it’s not to others. That’s how you kind of have to look at track and field. Overall, it’s, ‘Did you get better as a team this week? Did you accomplish some things? Did your athletes compete hard?’ I thought they did a great job.” - head coach Todd Harbour on the meet

WHAT'S NEXT
The Bears will take next week off before hosting the Michael Johnson Invitational on April 22 at Clyde Hart Track and Field Stadium.
