BALTIMORE -- Baylor senior quarterback Seth Russell is one of 15 quarterbacks, who remains on The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award watch list following a trimming of the original 43-man list Thursday.
Russell has led Baylor to a 5-0 start in 2016, while passing for 1,326 yards and 14 touchdowns with a 59.4 percent (92-of-155) completion rate. The Garland, Texas, native has also been a threat on the ground for the Bears, rushing for 234 yards and three scores on 45 attempts.
He is 15th in the FBS in passing TDs (14), yards per completion (14.41) and points responsible for (102), while being 18th in yards per game of total offense (312.0) and 21st in passing efficiency (155.9).
In the community, Russell traveled to Brazil for a mission trip with Baylor student-athletes in May 2016. He has also volunteered to pack lunches as part of BU’s annual Feed My Starving Children event. Earlier this summer, Russell along with several teammates and staff participated in Baylor’s university-wide community service day, Steppin’ Out, on which they painted the house of a Waco resident. He has also given his time to volunteer for Special Olympics, the Boys and Girls Club and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
In the classroom, Russell already graduated in May 2016 with a degree in communication studies. He is currently pursuing a second degree in health, kinesiology and leisure studies.
The Johnny Unitas honor is presented annually at the end of each season to the nation’s top college quarterback based on character, citizenship, scholastic achievement, leadership qualities and athletic accomplishments. Candidates must be a college senior or fourth-year junior on schedule to graduate with their class.
Russell is one of four Big 12 quarterbacks on the list.
Bryce Petty was BU’s last Johnny Unitas watch list member. He was a finalist to for the honor in 2014.
The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award® will be presented at a ceremony on Dec. 9, in Baltimore, Md.
The Bears, ranked No. 11 in the AP Top 25 and No. 8 in the Amway Coaches Poll host Kansas at 2:30 p.m. Saturday on FS1.
