Baylor's Shankle wins Waco Showdown wild card

WACO, Texas -- Baylor senior Blair Shankle swept past Houston teen Janice Shin, 6-1, 6-4, Sunday to win the Waco Showdown Wild Card Qualifier and earn a berth in the $50,000 USTA Pro Circuit event beginning November 6.

Shankle, a three-time ITA All-American from Dallas, won three weekend matches without dropping a set to earn a wild card into the 32-player main draw of the $50,000 Waco Showdown at the Hurd Tennis Center.

"I'm proud of the way (Shankle) competed all weekend and am looking forward to her continued progress this fall," said Baylor women's coach Joey Scrivano. "Qualifying for the Showdown gives her another opportunity to build on her game while being tested against the top players in the world."

Shin, who reached the final with a three-set win over Baylor junior Theresa Van Zyl in Saturday's semis, is ranked among the top 10 national college prospects by tennisrecruiting.net.

Switzerland's Viktorija Golubic, currently ranked 67th in the world, won last year's inaugural Waco Showdown, defeating former Stanford all-American Nicole Gibbs in the final.
