WACO, Texas – In the wake of Baylor football's 70-7 win over ULM, sophomore safety Terrell Burt
has been named a Big 12 Defensive Co-Player of the Week, the league's office announced on Monday. Burt shares the honor with Texas' Jackson Jeffcoat.
On Saturday, Burt added to Baylor's school-record tying 35-point first quarter by returning an interception 63 yards for a touchdown to put BU up 28-0 over ULM.
A product of Wylie, Texas, Burt also recorded a career-high seven tackles, including four solo stops, while helping the BU defense hold the Warhawks to only seven points and 295 yards of offense.
This season with Burt's help, BU's defense has scored four touchdowns and forced nine turnovers. As a unit, the Bears' defense ranks first nationally in tackles for loss (11.3 per game) and second in scoring by giving up only 7.7 points per game. Baylor has not given up a touchdown after halftime in its first three games. On the season, Burt has 17 tackles and two pass breakups.
Burt is BU's first Big 12 weekly award winner of the season, and he's Baylor's first Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honoree since cornerback Joe Williams won the award on Nov. 19 last season. The Bears have now had at least one Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honoree in each of the last 10 seasons. In total, Baylor has had 10 defensive players honored a combined 12 times since 2001.
On Sunday, Athlon Sports named BU quarterback Bryce Petty its Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week. The junior signal caller was responsible for 377 yards of total offense and five touchdowns in the win over ULM. He threw for four scores, while completing 18 of 27 passes for a career-high 351 yards.
BU is off to a 3-0 start to the season for a third consecutive year and is ranked No. 19 in the AP Top 25 and No. 18 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
Baylor has its second off-week of the season this week, but will return to action by hosting West Virginia to open Big 12 Conference play on Oct. 5 at Floyd Casey Stadium. That game will be televised by FOX Sports 1 at 7 p.m.
