Former Highlander Ryan Merritt to start Game 5 of ALCS

Former McLennan Community College left-handed pitcher Ryan Merritt will make his first MLB playoff appearance as he takes the mound as the starter for the Cleveland Indians in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series (ALCS) at 3 p.m. (EST) against the Toronto Blue Jays.
 
Merritt, a 24-year-old rookie from Celina, Texas, made his MLB debut against the Texas Rangers May 30, allowing only one hit in 4 1/3 scoreless innings. He has appeared in four games for the Indians since his debut and has a 1-0 record with a 1.64 ERA in 11 innings of work.
 
As a freshman for McLennan in 2011, Merritt made 15 starts on the mound, amassing a 10-3 record in 96 innings with 93 strikeouts and a 1.13 ERA. He was a first-team all-conference selection, the 2011 North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year and an NJCAA Second-Team All-American. He was selected in the 16th round by the Indians in the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft.
