IRVING, Texas -
Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty earned Big 12 Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors following his performance in Saturday's 63-34 win over Texas Tech, the league office announced Monday.
In the victory over the Red Raiders, Petty threw for 335 yards and three touchdowns on 17-for-31 passing. He also ran for two scores to give him a total of five touchdowns responsible for in the game.
With Baylor trailing 14-0, Petty found Levi Norwood down the sideline for a 40-yard TD pass. Petty's second TD throw was to Antwan Goodley for 31 yards at the end of the first quarter to put BU ahead for good, 21-20. For the final touchdown, Petty went back to Norwood for a game-long connection of 58 yards that put BU up 35-27 at half.
Petty's rushing scores came from one yard and six yards out.
Petty helped the Baylor offense rack up 675 yards of offense, which is the sixth time this year the Bears have eclipsed 600 yards.
Petty's eight-game streak with a rushing and passing TD is tied for the nation's third-longest since 1998 -- Tim Tebow (14), Marcus Mariota (9), Colin Kaepernick (8).
He's thrown for 200+ yards and at least 2 TDs in all nine career starts.
Petty shares the offensive distinction with Kansas running back James Sims.
This season, Petty has thrown for 2,992 yards and 24 touchdowns, while completing 65.2 percent of his passes. In his first year as a starter, Petty has only one interception and boasts an FBS-best 206.24 passing efficiency rating.
He has directed the nation's top offense as the Bears are averaging 684.8 yards per game and scoring 61.2 points per contest. Individually, Petty is first nationally in yards per completion (19.68), second in points responsible for per game (22.7), fifth in passing yards per game (332.4) and sixth in total offense (346.6).
The junior from Midlothian, Texas, is a semifinalist for the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award, the Maxwell Award and the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award.
Petty is BU's third offensive Big 12 weekly award winner of the season, joining Shock Linwood and Lache Seastrunk (Oct. 7). This is only the first time in Big 12 history that Baylor has had three separate offensive players honored in the same season and the second time the Bears have won at least three offensive honors in the same season. BU last accomplished the feat in 2011 when Robert Griffin III and Terrance Ganaway won the honor a combined four times. In total, Baylor has had nine offensive players honored a combined 14 times since 2002.
On Sunday, Athlon Sports named K.J. Morton as its National Defensive Player of the Week. Morton led Baylor with nine tackles (all solo) in Saturday's 63-34 win over Texas Tech. He filled up the stat sheet with his sixth career interception, along with a forced fumble, a sack, 4 PBUs and 3.0 tackles-for-loss. The group also honored Linwood as its Big 12 Freshman of the Week. It was the third time this year that he's received the honor, after also being recognized last week and on Oct. 27.
BU is off to an 9-0 start to the season for the first time in program history and a 6-0 league start for the first time since 1980. The Bears are ranked No. 3 in the AP Top 25 and No. 4 in both the USA Today Coaches Poll and the BCS Standings. That AP ranking is Baylor's highest since 1953.
