Rangers Receive C Juan Centeno From Astros in Waiver Claim

Arlington, Texas  The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has received catcher Juan Centeno (pronounced sen-TEN-oh) from the Houston Astros in a waiver claim.

Centeno, 28, batted .231 (12-52) with 2 home runs and 4 RBI in 22 games/15 starts for Houston last season spanning three stints in the major leagues: May 21-25, August 5-22, and August 31-end of season.  The left-handed batter was also a member of the Astros’ 25-man roster for each of the club’s three postseason series, but saw his only playoff action in Game 3 of the American League Division Series at Boston.  He spent the balance of the campaign with Triple-A Fresno, posting a .311/.354/.383/.737 slash line over 65 games.

Originally selected by the New York Mets in the 32nd round of the 2007 June draft, the Puerto Rico native has appeared in 101 major league games for the Mets (2013-14), Brewers (2015), Twins (2016), and Astros (2017).  He established career highs in most categories while with Minnesota in 2016, batting .261 with 3 home runs and 25 RBI in 55 games.

With the addition of Centeno, the Rangers now have 38 players on the major league roster.
