IRVING, TEXAS - Baylor men's tennis sophomore Johannes Schretter was selected as the Big 12 Player of the Week Tuesday by the conference office.
Schretter provided both the clinching doubles point win and the singles match clincher in upset fashion during Baylor’s 4-1 victory over No. 8 Texas on Wednesday, April 12, in Austin.
In doubles, the 86th-ranked Jimmy Bendeck and Schretter cruised past No. 67 George Goldhoff and Leo Telles, 6-2, at the No. 2 spot. The BU duo jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back to clinch the opening point for the Bears.
To clinch the match, the 78th-ranked Schretter recorded a singles upset of his own, charging past No. 42 Yuya Ito, 6-4, 1-6, 6-0, at the No. 3 spot. Schretter's second-set loss was his first set loss since March 17, after he had won six consecutive matches in straight sets. However, the sophomore wasted little time getting back on track with the shutout in the third set.
In singles, Schretter is 18-1 in dual-match play and has won nine-straight decisions. With Bendeck in doubles, Schretter is 10-1 and has won five straight matches.
It is Baylor's 43rd Big 12 weekly honor since 2000. Schretter is one of 18 different Bears to be recognized in that stretch. It is the first time Schretter has won the honor in his career and the third time a Bear has been recognized in 2017, after Juan Benitez was awarded the accolade on Jan. 17 and March 21
BU will host now host its final regular season match of 2017 with No. 9 TCU coming to town Wednesday at 6 p.m. CT.
