UMHB football routs Belhaven 59-21

Jackson, Mississippi – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team fell behind early but dominated the rest of the way as the Cru cruised to a 59-21 victory over Belhaven University Saturday afternoon in Mississippi. UMHB improves to 9-0 overall with the victory while the loss drops the Blazers to 1-8 on the year.

Belhaven took the lead when Hunter McEachern hit Nate Williams with a nine-yard scoring pass on the game’s opening possession. But UMHB took over with its running game from there and scored the next 52 points to pull away. Markeith Miller scored on a 42-yard run on the Cru’s first possession and Blake Jackson added an eight-yard TD pass to Bryce Wilkerson to make it 14-7. Miller added a 37-yard scoring dash and Duane Thompson scored on a 14-yard scamper to stretch the UMHB lead to 28-7 at halftime. The Cru committed four first-half turnovers to keep Belhaven in the game.

Jon Mowery kicked a 25-yard field goal, Miller raced 40 yards for another touchdown and Jackson hit DeNerian Thomas with a three-yard touchdown pass to make it 45-7 at the end of the third quarter, Isaiah Shepherd added two fourth quarter touchdown runs for UMHB and Clayton Webb threw a pair of scoring passes for Belhaven in the fourth quarter to account for the final points.

The Cru rolled up 560 rushing yards and finished with 749 yards of total offense in the game. UMHB hurt itself with the four turnovers and was penalized seven times for 70 yards. Belhaven threw for 456 yards and finished with 492 yards of total offense and the Blazers also turned the ball over four times.

Miller ran for 235 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries. That is the third-highest single-game rushing total in Cru history. Thompson added 135 yards on 12 totes and Shepherd chipped in 96 yards on 11 attempts. Jackson was 15-22 passing for 166 yards and two scores. Reggie Wilson had seven tackles and an interception for UMHB and Caleb Armstrong recorded three sacks.


Webb was 24-55 passing for 373 yards and two touchdowns in relief of injured starter McEachern. Williams caught 11 passes for 145 yards and two scores. Jack Lacy had a team-high seven tackles for the Blazers in the loss.


UMHB will now return home to close out the regular season against Louisiana College next Saturday at Crusader Stadium. The Cru and Wildcats will kick off at 1:00 PM on Senior Day.
