Brace for daring stunts in the skies over Temple, with the return of the Central Texas Airshow!
The three day event kicks off Friday, but pilots started arriving Thursday evening to practice their hair-raising tricks with our KCEN-HD camera on board.
From a walk through World War II history to a flying legend in the movie industry, it is all here with this year's airshow.
This is Hollywood stunt pilot Corkey Fornof's first landing at the Temple Airport for the Central Texas Air Show. He is showing off the "LoPresti Fury," a fuel efficient "Ferrari with wings," as he calls it.
But Fornof has flown nearly every model on display at this airshow, during flight sequences for movies like "Mission Impossible II," "Face-off," and the Bond series. "I truly enjoyed the Bond movies," he says.
Now, 46 films and 3,000 airshows later, Fornof has put his landing gear down in Temple, next to other flying enthusiasts like Air Force Staff Sergeant Graham Fitzpatrick. " I've actually been deployed with this aircraft here," says Fitzpatrick, pointing to a huge F-16 fighter jet.
Fitzpatrick, and the rest of the Viper West Demonstration Team, is showing off two F-16 fighter jets, including one just in from Afghanistan. "This is actually its first demo show that it's ever been on," he says, "it just got painted about two weeks ago."
On the ground, it is hearing the stories of the flight crews and their aircraft that draws people in. But in the sky, it is the daredevil maneuvers! "What it can do, the barrel rolls it can do," says Fitzpatrick, "they are pretty insane. It can do roll after roll."
So dive into the airshow fun and learn there is more than what meets the sky! "I love flying airshows," says Fornof, "it puts me right in touch with the people and we can talk about whatever they like. If they want to talk movies, we'll talk movies or airplanes."
The Central Texas Airshow gets underway Friday afternoon with a static display from 4:00-6:30 p.m. The aerobatic display runs from 6:30-9:30 p.m.
On Saturday and Sunday, the static display is open from 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. The aerobatic display is from 1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m.
Some of the highlights include the F-16 demo and P-51 heritage flight. The Aeroshell Aerobatic Team will also be a part of the show.
Saturday's show features a B-2 Stealth Bomber Flyover.
One unique highlight that no other airshow has will center around the Vietnam-era aircraft and aerial performances, including a ground re-enactment.
Adult tickets are $15/day or $30/weekend. Children 12 and under are $5. Kids under the age of six are free.
