Semi bursts into flames off I-35, sparking grassfire

Posted: Updated:

The cab of an 18-wheeler caught on fire around 2:00 p.m. Friday, bringing traffic to a halt in both directions of I-35 between Bruceville and Lorena, near exit 318 southbound.

But, the fire quickly spread to engulf the entire semi and sparked a fast-moving grassfire.  Wind gusts around 30 miles an hour fanned the flames, even pushing them as high as 40 feet into nearby trees.

Firefighters from Bruceville-Eddy, Lorena and Moody rushed to extinguish the flames that destroyed the semi.  The next task is stopping the grassfire before homes are threatened.

At this point, investigators have not released what caused the truck to catch on fire or the condition of the driver.
