It's the first time the Baylor Bears have had consecutive bowl appearances since the 1990s, and fans know it. Tickets, good luck. Merchandise, it's gone as fast as it hits the shelves. The hype is bigger than ever.
In the midst of a land of green and gold stands someone foreign to all of it. Dawn Walton will tell you she didn't come easily to this store full of Baylor spirit gear at the Waco mall.
"Been here 16 years, I might as well do it," said Walton.
But the pressure was too much, the hype way too great. She's getting a Baylor shirt.
"Sad to say that I am not a big Baylor fan. More of an Aggie fan. 'But for this season?' I'm a Baylor fan," said Walton.
There's a lot of people stepping up to the Baylor plate these days with a consecutive bowl game and a Heisman winner. Stores like W Promotions say the bowl fever has them selling double from last year. They're printing shirts like money.
"We think were going to go through a couple thousand in the next two or three days," said W Promotions Co-owner Trent Weaver.
The ground zero of green and gold agrees. The Baylor Bookstore can't keep Alamo Bowl schwag on their shelves, especially anything mentioning the word Heisman.
"We've had it, we just sold out within a couple, hours," said Baylor Bookstore employee Roger Harvey of Heisman gear.
But they'll keep reordering as long as we keep buying. A shipment comes in mid-week.
Tickets, now those are tough to come by. Baylor's allotment of tickets is already sold out. But you can still get some at the Alamo Bowl's website, where the cheapest seats are around 95 dollars. Here's a link.
But a new fan has her pick, good enough to show some newfound respect.
"They've just kind of gotten better, and the respect is finally there for them," said Walton.
