Honoring expecting veterans. The Temple VA Hospital and the Daughter's of the American Revolution are starting a new program to do just that.
Tuesday they held their first baby shower for veteran moms-to-be. This one honored Sarah Hessil who served as a Sergeant in Operation Iraqi Freedom. But unlike other baby showers, the little man of the hour, Baby Elliot, was there. Sarah gave birth eight weeks ago.
Organizers say they're grateful for the opportunity to do something like this for female vets. And Sarah was moved by their compassion.
"It's awesome 'cuz it's like Christmas because we didn't get many stuff, much stuff for Christmas," she says.
The VA plans to hold baby showers every quarter for new and expecting mothers. It's part of their effort to improve women's health care. They're also opening mother friendly rooms for veterans and employees who need to breast or bottle feed their little ones.
