(KCEN)- The Bull Hide Creek wastewater treatment plant is now operational.
Thursday morning the plant began treating sewage for the cities of Lorena and Hewitt.
The plant had been a source of controversy.
The original plans had the treated water emptying into Bull Hide Creek, but after numerous public protests it was decided that the water will instead flow into area wetlands.
Lorena's original treatment plant is over capacity, so this new plant allows room for new businesses and homes.
It could also bring down the cost of water and sewage for everyone, officials say.
