KILGORE (KYTX) -- A 7-year old girl is recovering in a Dallas hospital tonight after a house fire in Kilgore. As CBS 19's Abby Broyles shows us, family members think the fire started after the girl's blanket got caught in a space heater.
Leatha McBroom had just gone to bed around 11:00 Tuesday night when she says the fire broke out in her Kilgore home.
"I came out of the bedroom, and my whole living room's in flames," McBroom said.
Her two grandchildren were asleep in the living room.
10-year old Bo made it out without getting hurt.
But the fire badly burned her 7-year old granddaughter, Rachel Ann Rainwater.
Leatha says Rachel's blanket got caught in a space heater.
"Her feet's burned, her hands are burned, not as bad as her feet," McBroom said.
Paramedics took Rachel to the hospital.
Because her burns are so severe, she's now undergoing treatment at Parkland Hospital in Dallas.
"My family got out, and that's the most important thing," McBroom said.
Now Leatha is praying for Rachel as she tries to salvage what the fire didn't destroy - belongings of the six people who called this house a home.
Leatha lived here for 40 years.
"Red Cross - thank you Red Cross - has put us up in a motel," McBroom said.
The rest of Rachel's family is with her in Dallas hoping they can all come home soon.
We're told Rachel is listed in serious condition tonight.
Firefighters have not officially determined the cause of the fire. The house is a total loss.
