TEMPLE, TEXAS (KCEN) -- James Johnson, the surviving driver of a Jan. 17 Academy ISD school bus accident, has been placed in a medically induced coma as doctors continue monitoring his condition, according to friends and family.
Johnson has been recovering at Scott & White Hospital since the accident, where he underwent plastic surgery on Friday. He will undergo another operation Saturday and possibly Sunday.
However, Johnson's family is concerned he won't awake from his coma.
The accident occurred when a Lowe's delivery truck ran a stop sign on Old Highway 95 and FM 93, slamming into the bus and causing it to flip.
30 children and three adults were injured in the Jan. 17 accident.
Haley Johannsen, a 14-year-old passenger in the bus, suffered a broken spinal cord in the accident. She was moved to a Dallas rehab facility in late January.
A benefit for Johnson is expected to be organized in coming weeks by his family.
