Students and Teachers Accepting Their Schools Could Close

Posted: Updated:

KCEN (WACO) - The plan is out and the list of cuts is set. Today parents and kids are accepting the fact their schools are on the chopping block.

The new plan will go before the board next week. A final vote will take place February 23rd.

For those who braved the morning cold, it was the annual 5K fundraiser for A.J. Moore Academy. Like every year, the fastest got awards. Like every year, students gave out fruit and water. But this year, it's different. Because this time, there may not be a next year.

On Friday the Waco Independent School District Superintendent released the list of schools she says need to be closed. Included is A.J. Moore Academy. The district is millions in the red. The decision came as no surprise to those watching the budget showdown.

"Am I happy? No, I'm not happy. I just wanna', I feel sorry for the kids," said Bill Foulds, president of the A.J. Moore Business Advisory Board.

Elementary schools like Sul Ross, 4 in total, would close.  A.J. Moore Academy's program, students and teachers would move in with University Highschool.

The A.J. Moore Academy building will no longer hold academies. Brazos Middle and University Middle Schools will consolidate and move there.

Krystal Tinker's been a science teacher at A.J. Moore for 4 years.

"It's going to work, were gonna' make it work, and were gonna' keep our heads held high," said Tinker.

This is freshman Jazmine Skinner's first year here.

"We should stay open, like we should do some fundraisers. I know it's not gonna make a lot of money, but we should just try," said Jazmine.
