College Credit for Heroes will Speed up Degree Programs

Posted: Updated:

It will soon be easier for soldiers and veterans to arm themselves with college degrees and training certificates, thanks to a program called College Credit for Heroes.

Governor Rick Perry signed it into law in July.

The plan is to make the transition from the military to the job market as smooth as possible.

One way it does that is by helping schools create programs for our military heroes.

One is already on deck at Central Texas College, and students say they're ready for action.

Marine veteran and CTC student Justin Agan's new mission is to earn a college degree after six years of service.

"I want to be a veterinarian for horses, so right now, I'm actually just starting out," he said.

Thanks to the new program, he'll soon get a little backup from the state.

It standardizes the way military experience is counted toward college credit in Texas.

"The purpose of it is to get the credit evaluated in such, so that we can get them into the workforce in a quicker manner," said Annabelle Smith, CTC's director of student aid veteran services.

CTC is working on a website where soldiers simply enter their specialties to find out exactly what classes they need.

That takes some of the burden off of veterans like Justin.

"Vets aren't paperwork driven. They've been dealing with the government long enough. They want it simple, so if it makes it simple, then they're going to be all for it," he said.

There is no set date for when College Credit for Heroes will roll out, but it's expected to soon.

CTC Started training to implement their new web system Friday.
