FORT HOOD, Texas (KCEN) -- At least 500 people gathered Saturday to honor the life of Fort Hood Brig. Gen. Terence J. Hilder, who died in Afghanistan earlier this month of natural causes.

The funeral was held at Fort Hood Chapel where soldiers, friends, and family paid tribute to Hildner, recalling his life as both a father and soldier.

Hildner served as the former commanding general of the 14th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) in Kabul, Afghanistan when he died on Feb. 3.

"He was the best general officer I have ever seen when it came to understanding the meaning of teamwork," said Commanding General Lt. Gen. Don Campbell Jr, who served alongside Hildner in Afghanistan.

13th ESC Commander Col. Knowles Y. Atchison recalled their time together both on and off the battlefield.

"He was my general, and he was my friend," Atchison said.

Atchison noted Hildner's relationship with God and their shared faith that brought them together.

"Brigadier Gen. Hildner was a professional Soldier in the United States Army, but he was also in the Lord's Army."

Others lined up to pay speak and pay tribute to Hildner, recalling his life in Central Texas and Afghanistan.

The benediction was preceded by a bagpipe rendition of "Amazing Grace," played by retired Maj. Bill Herridge.

The ceremony was concluded a long bugler playing "Taps."

Hildner will be laid to rest at the Arlington National Cemetery Feb. 29 with full military honors.
