Large Crowd Throws Bricks, Fireworks at Waco Police on 4th of July

(KCEN) -- The City of Waco made it through 4th on the Brazos with only a few minor issues but after the celebration was over, a large group of people started causing trouble on Elm Street. 

Around 11 p.m. a group of about 300 to 400 people started throwing fireworks and blocking Elm Street.

Officers' attempts to move the crowd were not successful and when they moved into the area, the people became hostile.

One person, identified as Ashley Nicole Richards, assaulted an officer and physically injured him. She was taken into custody and charged with Assault on a Peace Officer and Resisting Arrest.

The crowd then started throwing rocks at officers and police cars. One officer received a minor injury when he was struck. Large fireworks that explode with a large flame were also thrown at officers by people in the crowd where attempting to use them as hand grenades.

An armored vehicle was used to try to clear the streets. When it was brought in, members of the group started throwing bricks and large pieces of concrete.

Police were forced to use chemical munitions to clear the crowd.

The ordeal took about an hour and a half to be cleared and for traffic to resume on Elm Street.

No citizens were injured but two officers received minor injuries.
