Salas, who fell out of favor with the coaching staff during training camp and the preseason, was sent to the Patriots for a late-round pick in 2015. The pick is not conditional. The Salas trade cleared one of the spots needed to be freed up for the additions of Ganaway and Heard.
The other spot was cleared later in the day when the Rams waived cornerback Jerome Murphy, a third-round pick in 2010 out of South Florida.
The Rams also are putting together their eight-man practice squad, signing running back Chase Reynolds, wide receiver Nick Johnson, tight end Corey Harkey, center/guard Tim Barnes, defensive end Mason Brodine, and linebacker Aaron Brown on Saturday.
Five of the six players were with the team throughout training camp and the preseason, and cleared waivers after being released Friday. The six player _ Brodine _ had just joined the team last week from Oakland, playing only in the Rams' preseason finale against Baltimore.
Barnes played at the University of Missouri. Aaron Brown was a seventh-round pick by the Rams last April out of Hawaii. The Rams still have two spots open on the practice squad.
Linebacker Sammy Brown, who was released by the Rams on Friday and was a candidate for the team's practice squad, was claimed by Miami thus joining the Dolphins' active roster.
Tight end Deangelo Peterson, who made a strong run for a spot on the Rams' 53-man roster and also was under consideration for a practice squad spot, has been signed to the Washington Redskins' practice squad.
