FORT COLLINS, Colo. –
Baylor
women's golf used a final-round 296 to move up two spots and take
second place at Colonel Bill Wollenberg's Ptarmigan Ram Classic at
Ptarmigan Country Club on Tuesday.
The
Lady Bears compiled a 54-hole total of 887 (23-over-par) to take second
place. Texas Tech won by shooting 4-under 860, while UNLV finished in
third place, four strokes back of Baylor.
"I'm
glad that we finished second, but it does leave a little bad taste in
my mouth that we lost by 27 shots to Texas Tech," head coach Jay Goble
said. "They obviously have two seniors that
were both first-team All-Americans last year, and that's kind of where
the difference is right now. And I'm playing with two freshmen on the
team and a couple of inexperienced players.
"But
overall, we finished sixth in this tournament last year to start our
season off, and this year we finished second," Goble added. "It's nice
to bring home some hardware, it's nice to be
close to the top, but I would be lying to you if I said we didn't have a
lot of work to do."
Baylor
joined Texas Tech as the only teams with three players in the top-15 in
the individual standings. Sophomore Hayley Davis shot a final round 74
to finish the tournament in ninth place
at 3-over (72-73-74=219). Davis finished in the top 10 for the 10th time in 13 collegiate tournaments played.
Freshman Lauren Taylor turned in a 1-under 71 in the final round to finish tied for 13th at 5-over (76-74-71=221) in her first collegiate tournament, and sophomore Emma Carberry
finished in 15th with a 6-over (74-71-77=222). Taylor shot
one of only seven below-par final rounds, moving up 10 spots in the
standings after entering the final day tied for 23rd place, and Carberry tied her career-best 54-hole total,
one day after setting 18- and 36-hole personal records.
"Lauren
played solid all week, she just didn't quite make the putts that she
needed to," Goble said. "Every round, she missed a couple short putts,
but she's got a lot of game. I expect her
to be a leader for a long time to come."
Junior Kaylin Terry shot 76 in the final round to finish tied for 30th at 11-over (75-76-76=227), and freshman Annette Lyche improved by two strokes for the second consecutive round,
firing a 75 to finish tied for 48th at 15-over (79-77-75=231).
Baylor now returns home to prepare for next week's Dick McGuire Invitational, which begins Monday in Albuquerque, N.M. The Lady Bears will be defending their title after shooting 11-over 887
to win the 2011 Dick McGuire Invitational.
