(KCEN) -- To breastfeed during class or to not breastfeed during class?
That's the question students at American University in Washington D.C. are divided over.
Many of the students said they wouldn't care if a professor was breastfeeding her baby during class.
Single mom Adrienne Pine did just that.
She wrote on her blog that her child was sick and needed to be fed.
Pine said it was the first day of class so she didn't want to cancel.
But some of her students have different opinions.
Student Sarah Mireles said, "I think what's inappropriate is that she brought her child to class in the first place. It's very distracting to a lot of the students."
Nia McCarthy said, "She had to finish the class, yeah. She let us know that she was about to, so I wasn't too surprised. I think she handled it in the most professional way that she could."
After Pine was contacted by the student newspaper, she wrote on her blog that due to this her workplace has become a hostile environment.
The university says it doesn't have a policy on breast-feeding but it does give new mothers breaks and a private place to pump breast milk.
