(KCEN) -- New York Senator Charles Schumer is calling on the Veterans Administration to provide more service dogs to vets.
Currently the VA reimburses the costs of a service dog for veterans with physical impairments.
A directive going into effect next month delays compensation for vets with mental and emotional problems until research is completed.
Schumer says the effectiveness is clear, and no more research is needed.
"As the wars are winding down, and the ranks of those suffering mental and emotional trauma remain sky high, the VA cannot, it must not, deny benefits to veterans that will help them access to these service dogs."
