Chicago Teachers Continue Strike Into Second Week

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- More than 350,000 students in Chicago won't have school again today as a strike of one of the nation's largest school districts continues.

Members of the Chicago Teachers Union have decided to extend their work-stoppage in order to better understand a proposed new contract.

Under the new proposed deal, teachers would get cost of living increases, 30 percent of a teacher's evaluation would still be based on a students' test scores and teachers would have new rights to appeal their rating.

After the teachers union announced the strike extension, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel called on the city's attorneys to pursue a court order forcing the teachers back to the classroom, calling their delay in accepting the proposed new contract, "wrong for our children."
