ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. –
Baylor women's golf shot 8-over-par 592 across 36 holes on Monday during the 33rd Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational at the par-73 UNM Championship Course. The Lady Bears enter Tuesday's
final round in fourth place, just four shots back of the lead.
Baylor
(+8; 298-294=592) shot a 6-over 298 in the opening round, placing it in
a three-way tie for sixth, but the Lady Bears bounced back with the
lowest second-round score in the 17-team field,
a 2-over 294. BU trails UNLV (+4), Ohio State (+6) and Iowa State (+7)
entering Tuesday's final round that begins with a 9 a.m. CT shotgun start.
"The
second round got pretty windy, and I think the wind really psyched a
lot of people out this afternoon," head coach Jay Goble said. "Our girls
played a lot better in the afternoon, so it
was a lot of fun to watch."
Sophomore
Hayley Davis (-2; 73-71=144) posted Baylor's lowest score in each round
and is tied for fourth individually, four shots back of the leader,
Colorado's Jennifer Coleman (-6).
"Hayley
finished second here last year, and I think she feels really
comfortable on the golf course," Goble said. "When the weather gets a
little tougher, she's used to it because she's from
England. When the conditions get more difficult, she feels like that
gives her an advantage because she can control the flight of her ball.
When she goes out and shoots 2-under, it gives the rest of the team
confidence."
Emma
Carberry (+2; 76-72=148) rallied back from a 3-over opening round and a
rough start on the first three holes in the afternoon to shoot 1-under
in the second round, placing her in a tie
for 17th individually.
"Emma
was awesome this afternoon," Goble said. "She bogied the last two holes
in the first round and started off her second round 3-over through four
holes, but she ended up shooting 1-under
for the day. For her to go through that slump in the middle of the day,
and to come back this afternoon when the conditions were much more
difficult, it really shows how strong she is mentally."
Annette
Lyche (+4; 74-76=150), Lauren Taylor (+5; 76-75=151) and Kaylin Terry
(+8; 75-79=154) rounded of the scoring for the Lady Bears. Freshman
Natalia Perez (+14; 76-84=160) is playing as
an individual in her first collegiate tournament.
The
Lady Bears are looking to repeat as champions of the Dick McGuire
Invitational after winning the 2011 event. Live stats are available
