For
the fifth consecutive season, the college football season will begin
with a marquee matchup at Cowboys Stadium featuring Louisiana State
University and Texas Christian University squaring off in the "Cowboys
Classic" on Saturday, August 31. The game will be nationally televised on either ESPN or ABC.
The
game will be a matchup of two teams that have previously posted
victories in the "Cowboys Classic" Labor Day weekend showcase with TCU
claiming a 30-21 win over Oregon State in 2010 and LSU topping Oregon
40-27 in 2011. This will actually be the third appearance at Cowboys
Stadium for both squads, with TCU topping BYU in a conference game in
2011 and LSU knocking off Texas A&M in the 2011 AT&T Cotton Bowl
Classic.
This will mark the ninth time the two schools have played each other,
with LSU holding the series lead at 5-2-1 lead, but will be the first
meeting since 1968.
This season's Cowboys Classic is the fifth year of a long-term agreement between ESPN and Cowboys Stadium to bring a top college football game to Arlington, Texas, during the Labor Day holiday weekend. The first four contests featured matchups between ranked teams with No. 20 BYU defeating No. 3 Oklahoma 14-13 in 2009, No. 6 TCU beating No. 24 Oregon State 30-21 in 2010, No. 4 LSU downing No. 5 Oregon 40-27 in 2011 and No. 2 Alabama victorious over No. 8 Michigan 41-14 in 2012.
