
STILLWATER, Okla. (MSNBC) — Stillwater Junior High School has canceled classes for the day after a deadly shooting near campus Wednesday.
According to officials with the school district in the City of Stillwater, one student shot and killed himself at the Junior High School at 7:50 a.m. Wednesday.
Hundreds of students and staff heard the gunfire as school started for the day.
Witnesses said it was an 8th grade student; the school has not confirmed that.
The district immediately locked down the school and began transporting students by bus to nearby Cimarron Plaza.
According to students, the shooting happened in an area known as "the pit" outside of the junior high school.
Here is the statement from the City of Stillwater:
"STILLWATER, Okla. / Sept. 26, 2012 / 8:48 a.m. – Stillwater Police Department confirms that one is dead from a self-inflicted gun shot wound at the Stillwater Junior High School at 7:50 a.m. this morning.
Junior High students will be transferred to Cimarron Plaza for parents to pick up beginning at 9 a.m. Students who normally ride the bus will be taken home.
Skyline Schools were under a temporary lockdown. All Stillwater schools, except the Junior High, will have a regular school day.
Police are setting up a media center at the Carmike 10 at 1909 N. Perkins Road.
