(KCEN) -- Just like many Hollywood stars, the world famous Hollywood sign is getting a makeover.

The giant letters will be stripped down to bare metal, primed and then given a new coat of white paint.

The 10-week project starts today as the sign gets ready to celebrate its 90th birthday next year.

In 1923, it was unveiled as a way to promote a real estate development called Hollywoodland.

The last four letters were removed in 1949 and the sign was rebuilt in 1978.
