Texas Cheerleaders Allowed to Make Religious Banners For Now

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- Just call them cheerleaders for Christ.

After a recent controversy, some tough cheerleaders won a small victory in a Beaumont court.

The squad at Kountze High School say they are showing support for their team and their religious beliefs.

They are doing so by painting bible verses on the banners that players run through before each game.

Recently a spectator at a game complained to an atheist group.

They argued the banners unconstitutionally amount to public school's advocating a particular religion.

Yesterday a Texas judge extended the temporary order he granted last month to allow the banners for two weeks.

The cheerleaders will return to court on October 18.

At that time both attorneys will present their findings.
