Contestant in Bug Eating Competition Dies

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- A contest to win a python turned deadly when a man allegedly ate too many cockroaches and worms.

Thirty-two-year-old Edward Archbold took part in the eating contest at a reptile store in Deerfield, Florida Friday night.

Archbold won the contest, but started throwing up afterward.

He later collapsed in front of the store and was taken to a hospital, where he died.

The store owner says the contestants had to sign a waiver saying they are sober and don't have allergies to shellfish, which have similar allergens to cockroaches.

None of the other contestants had any medical issues after the contest.

An autopsy will determine the cause of death.
