How to Save on Halloween Costumes

Posted: Updated:

Halloween is just around the corner, and if a unique costume is your plan of attack, then we've got some money-saving tips for you. Since getting that one of a kind costume doesn't have to come at a scary price.

Halloween is less than 3 weeks away, and this is the perfect time to find a costume. The Garcia family is looking for something special, and the prices at the Goodwill speak to them. "They're cheap, really good prices for the costume. It's only going to be worn one time," says Jamie Garcia.

The Goodwill puts aside thousands of items throughout the year that could make good Halloween costumes. And once they're out, they're a bargain. "The average person could normally walk away from goodwill with a costume for less than $10 depending on how extravagant they want to be and what kind of accessories they get," says Shannon Kendrick with the Heart of Texas Goodwill.

If you want something unique and don't know where to start, they can help. "We have these things called recipe books, that people can come, they can look at the recipe books, get a good idea of the type of costume that they could put together," says Kendrick.

From a scarecrow, to a gypsy,  the recipe book shows you what you need. Since for some, Halloween is all about having a costume that makes you stand out. "It's just much funner to be creative and build up your own costume, this is a wonderful place, they have a lot of variety," says Dora Terpstra, who was also shopping for a Halloween costume.

As for the Garcias', Halloween will always be a tradition. "We're real big on Halloween and Christmas. It's what we celebrate, its memories," says Garcia.

The Goodwill's new costumes range from $7 to $15.
