(KCEN) -- After being placed in hospice care, former U.S. Senator George McGovern is now on life support in South Dakota.

McGovern is best known to some as the Democratic candidate for President in 1972.

He lost the election to Richard Nixon.

McGovern served four years in the House of Representatives and 18 years in the U.S. Senate.
