(KCEN) -- A Louisiana mother of two is now charged with killing both of her children.
That's after a family member found them in an apartment on Wednesday.
Twenty-three-year-old Chelsea Thornton admitted to shooting her 3-year-old son and drowning her 4-year-old daughter in a bathtub.
In an interview she told police she shot the boy with a semi-automatic handgun, then drowned the girl when the gun failed to fire again.
Family members say the father of the children recently moved back to the area from Texas and just moved the mother and the children into his apartment.
Nicole Hammons, a family member, said, "They had an off and on relationship. He tried to help her and help their kids and other family members also tried to help her. You can only go so far."
Thornton left the home, then took a bus to the hospital because she had stomach pains and a headache.
She was later arrested and taken into police custody.
