Woman Who Claimed Men Set Her on Fire Made Incident Up

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- A woman in Louisiana claimed that three men attacked her and set her on fire.

Now investigators are saying she made the whole thing up.

Sharmeka Moffitt said three men wearing white hoodies attacked her in Winnsboro Park Sunday night.

But police are saying the evidence doesn't match up with her account.

Winnsboro Police Chief Lester Thomas said, "The investigation for Ms. Moffitt has revealed that this was not an attack, but self inflicted incident that happened to her. Evidence has been recovered from a cigarette lighter and a charcoal starter lighter with her fingerprints was on the bottle."

The Moffitt family released a statement on their Facebook page saying they are devastated to learn the circumstances but that they appreciate the thorough investigation by local and state police.

Moffitt suffered burns on most of her body and is still in critical condition.

The District Attorney's office will now decide if she'll face charges.
