(KCEN) -- Dallas-based American Airlines plans to hire 2,500 pilots over the next five years.

While ramping up it's international flights, American will increase its pilot base from 8,000 to more than 10,000.

This all comes after the troubled airline laid off thousands of pilots while downsizing because of bankruptcy.

The airline also plans to begin new international routes beginning next year.
