Retiree Appreciation Event In Full Swing

Posted: Updated:

Once a year, thousands of retired heroes come to Fort Hood for the biggest appreciation event in the country, and today, it's officially in full swing.

It started this morning with a golf tournament on post.

Through Saturday, veterans will get help with everything from vaccines to legal documents and benefits.

And while it connects them with the resources they need, for some, it's much more than that.

21-year Air Force Veteran Ralph Donnelly and 26-year Navy Veteran Charles Whitehead hit the greens today, finding lots of common ground upon the rolling hills of the golf course.

Ralph said, "I met Charles this morning, and he and I are going to be buddies for life. That's the way it goes."

"That's what this is all about, it's not about coming out with friends, it's about coming out and making new friends, and that's what I enjoy," said Charles.
