(KCEN) -- As much of the east coast is focused on Hurricane Sandy people in the west got a scare of their own today.

A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Canada triggered a  tsunami warning all the way in Hawaii.

Beaches and harbors were closed across the state.

Tens of thousand headed for higher ground as the tide receded 2 feet.

It was eventually downgraded to an advisory after several small waves came ashore.
