(KXAS) -- Two people are dead after a string of assaults at the Greater Sweethome Missionary Baptist Church in Forest Hill Monday afternoon, at least one of which resulted in a homicide, police say.

Investigators said a call was received to 911 by the church secretary after a man assaulted a janitor with a blunt weapon outside of the church. The attacker then got into his car and crashed into the building, police said.

The man then went into the church and beat the pastor with an electric guitar, police say. The pastor died after the assault.

When police arrived, the man was still armed with the blunt object and officers used a stun gun to restrain the man.

The man was arrested at the scene and placed in a police car.

According to MedStar spokesperson Matt Zavadsky,  when officials later went to check on the man, he was not breathing and had no pulse.  Upon arrival at John Peter Smith Hospital, the man was declared dead.

Two others were transported to the hospital, including the janitor.  Their conditions are not known.

A short time after word of the assaults began to spread throughout the congregation and community, a crowd gathered outside of the church. Two people from that crowd were given medical attention after being overcome by grief, officials said.

Forest Hill police have requested the assistance of the Texas Rangers in the investigation.
