Suspect Still on Loose After Robbing Man Near Baylor Campus

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- A gunman who robbed a man near Baylor's campus is still on the loose this morning.

It happened Monday night around 10 p.m. in an alley near the University Terrace Apartments on 8th Street and Bagby.

A man was talking to a female friend who then went inside her apartment.

That's when the gunman approached the man and demanded his valuables.

He fired his gun and pistol-whipped the man before taking off with his wallet, phone and keys.

Police do not believe this is related to the string of robberies near the campus last year.

But students nearby say they try to always be aware of what's going on around them.

Sergeant Patrick Swanton of the Waco Police Department said, "There is not a rash of problems down there. This is an isolated incident. Just as we would anybody else, be careful of your surroundings, report suspicious activity make us aware of it and watch out for each other."

Mark Cunningham, who lives near the crime scene, said, "When I walk by myself, it's daylight. If it's dark outside I've usually got someone with me. So I wouldn't say I'm too scared. Now if my sister were here I would be."

The suspect is described as a black man around five-foot-four.

He weighs about 140 pounds and was wearing a white and blue letterman jacket during the robbery.
